Abstract

This study examines the proposed establishment of SCHEMA Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) at the Eulogio \"Amang\" Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology\'s College of Architecture and Fine Arts using an unobtrusive research design. It addresses three questions: the laboratory\'s institutional benefits in pedagogy, research, and community engagement; guidance for decision-making in the pre-implementation phase; and alignment with global inclusive-education objectives. Employing Social Interactionism theory, the study analyzes institutional documents from 2023 to 2025-including feasibility studies, curriculum and syllabus audits, partnership agreements, and web-benchmarking reports-while avoiding researcher intervention or participant reactivity.

The proposed FabLab aims to close critical digital-fabrication gaps in Philippine higher- education arts and design programs. Documentary data project a 45% increase in prototype production, shifting design thinking from theoretical instruction toward hands-on, ideation-to- prototype workflows. The facility integrates fabrication technologies-3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routers, and others-promoting interdisciplinary collaboration among students, faculty, industry partners, local micro and small, medium enterprises (MSMEs), and community organizations.

Results demonstrate that SCHEMA aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4, 9, and 11, as both an educational innovation hub and a catalyst for regional economic growth. A phased implementation strategy addresses common challenges in resource-limited settings through faculty development, various funding sources, and strategic partnerships. Risk-mitigation frameworks identify financial instability, curricular resistance, and equitable access as primary barriers and propose evidence-based solutions drawn from successful Philippine FabLab case studies. This unobtrusive, evidence-driven approach provides a reliable and replicable framework for evaluating innovation infrastructures, anticipating transformative impacts through seamless integration in curricular and community contexts.
