In response to increasing climate risks, regulatory demands, and consumer expectations, Philippine enterprises arc under growing pressure to integrate environmental sustainability into their operational strategies while maintaining productivity. This study explores how businesses, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), navigate the intersection of operational efficiency and environmental responsibility. Using a mixed-methods research design, the study draws on quantitative survey data from 50 industry professionals and qualitative interviews with six key informants across manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, and services sectors.
The findings reveal that most enterprises prioritize efficiency measures such as energy monitoring, cost management, and employee training. However, environmental practices such as using eco-friendly materials, tracking carbon emissions, and consistent environmental reporting-are less consistently implemented, particularly among MSMEs. Financial limitations, lack of technical knowledge, and weak institutional support are major barriers. Despite these challenges, 70% of firms report leadership support for sustainability-focused innovation, and 66% show efforts to align efficiency goals with environmental strategies. Nevertheless, investment in green technologies remains limited, with only 54% willing to absorb higher upfront costs.
The research underscores the importance of embedding sustainability into strategic planning and operational decision-making. It also highlights the vital role of leadership and knowledge management in promoting sustainable practices. These insights offer valuable implications for both industry and education. For businesses, the study recommends stronger policy support, access to green technology, and capacity-building for MSMEs. For academic institutions, the findings advocate for curriculum innovations that emphasize real-world sustainability challenges, equipping future entrepreneurs and managers with the skills to lead green transformations.
Overall, the study contributes to understanding how Philippine industries are evolving toward sustainablc operations and identifies actionable strategies to support this transition. It aims to inform both business practices and educational reforms aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and the growing need for climate-resilient economic development.
