Abstract
This study presents the development of a solar-powered, smart retractable clothes drying rack utilizing an Arduino microcontroller and rain sensor automation, addressing the need for sustainable, automated drying solutions in urban households with limited space and unpredictable weather conditions. The primary objective is to design a system that automatically retracts indoors during rainfall to protect clothes and activates a blower for indoor drying, then extends outdoors under clear conditions. The system incorporates a solar panel for eco-friendly energy generation, an Arduino unit for logic control, rain sensors for environmental monitoring, and limit switches for mechanical safety. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) approach, the prototype was designed, assembled, and tested under varying weather and load conditions. Key findings include a consistent reaction time of 0.5 seconds and a retrieval speed of 0.96 m/s across load conditions ranging from 0 to 8 kg. The battery-powered system demonstrated an operational runtime of approximately 13.7 hours during continuous rain without sunlight. Results confirm that the system effectively integrates automation, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability. In conclusion, the proposed drying rack offers a viable alternative to traditional methods and electric dryers. For future enhancements, integration of humidity and temperature sensors, as well as a mobile app interface for remote control and monitoring, is recommended to improve drying accuracy and user convenience.
